FAQ                             Frequently Asked Questions

Service Period    We provide this service promptly and often turn a work order around in two to three weeks.  It is difficult to turn optical work around in less than a week.  There are time when the volume of work is low and we accumulate optical film work before we begin.  Please inquire.

Optical Service:

Transfer Service is popular!  We assist you in organizing your optical tape reels [by numbering each reels] so that video will play as the reels were numbered & organized.  Film leader/trailers and long dead spots are edited out.

Just because the film has turned "purple" or some other problem has created a low quality section, we do not automatically deleted that portion[s]. Printergy feels that it is not for us to decide what is important. Particularly so with images of people and events, we will leave the final decision to our customer.

We create "NTSC" DVD video; typeset a disc label and apply it. The disc will be packaged in a slim or poly jewel case.

Review at Home Via Cut Sheet        Knowledge fades after not seeing film for so long.  Take the video home, watch it and write down your comments & changes on the Cut Sheet. This option is available for an hourly rate and. with confidence, you can tell us that you really did want the "purple" section removed.  Sections of video can be rearranged similar in concept to Word Processors' cut & paste commands. We will edit and re-author the DVD from your written remarks.

Adding Titles Additional pictures & film and Remarks is something we normally do.  Once the cut sheet is filled, we can install the changes effieiently. We will also invite the customer in to review and verify final changes.  At that point, we will write a disc. UNLESS our customers are practiced using video editing software, I would not undertake this type of work. Please ask for an MPEG2 for PC or Mpeg4 for MACs.

FYI  Please let us know if you want to choose this option before you pick up your work. Our computer files are systematically deleted 45 days after project completion and / or when we need more space!

Full Service is custom video service starts out like the transfer service however we will work with you to choose video options. In our viewing area, we have many samples.  Popular choices are ...

  1. Choosing music & placing scene titles

  2. Text versus graphic DVD menus

  3. At-home review service

  4. Amaray case packaging with family picture

    5.  Composite video can contain video from other sources, slides and pictures, audio from cassette tapes and so on ...

Cost is at transfer rates plus a quote on the labor required to do the work.

FYI    We will re-edit the film once.  Studio editing rates are in effect from the second and subsequent re-editing sessions.

Preservation Service is offered for film going/gone bad.

There are many characteristics of film going bad:  1) It is dried out, brittle and easily cracks/crumbles 2) film with mold / bacteria (floating dark spots) 3) film with variable sized sprocket tapes guides (warn out) 4) tapes requiring use of a HEPA filter due to chemical decomposition (vinegar like smell) and, 5) tapes which have fused together requiring cutting away large film chunks.

Our policy is to the best job we can and capture the film MPEGx.

We will not edit the captured film as part of the preservation work until customer views the product.

Editing and finishing is a separate service and  cost.

High Definition Service  is available.  Service includes capturing the film in uncompressed, AVI format and rendering at full HD specs. The final product is available on Blu Ray disc.

STILLS

FAQ

SD or HD? We normally prepare Optical film for SD (Standard Definition) --- quality sufficient to make it look good on a TV or 720 LCD set.  HD 1080P is available.

HD Super 8 era film may not look great captured in HD mode. However, treating Super 8 as HD once it gets inside the computer sure makes a big difference with video rendering at 1080p / 60; Files are written to Blu Ray discs! Cost of BluRay discs are not included.

What if you want to do the production? Fine, we can create self edit formats such as AVI or MPEGx.  or MAC .MOV .

Can I have film placed on miniDV so I can run the tape into Avid? YES!! but the film is just copied to miniDV tape and is not in AVI or MPEGx format.

Can you Make Web playable formats:                 Yes!

Can you do color restoration /enhancement    Yes

Can I have the film on something else?              Yes, we can film the "transfer" and place the image on a miniDV tape for .18/foot.

And, I want a VHS copy!                                          Sure, but normally we make the DVD production first and dub VHS last.

How long can a DVD be?                                      Under 2 hours generally.  DVDs are like VHS tapes where there are standard, long play and extended play modes.  We can put many hours of video on to a DVD but video quality declines with more video.
