Technology
is the backbone of Printergy's services. By using technology
tools, we can migrate older information into today's formats. Media
recordings created on yesterdays equipment such as vinyl records, 8 track,
Beta's, VHS, DAT, audio cassette,..., and many printed products; as
well today's audio/video camcorder formats are made usable with today's
digital media. We must be careful to protect ownership rights.
There are things we can do
and many things we can not. We can act as your agent if you "own"
the source material and create today's digital formats and make multiple
copies under certain conditions.
We can not:
There are
things we can do:
 |
Make/duplicate back up
disc, derivative copies or discs for home use
|
 |
Mixdown/edit content,
from multiple sources, onto new discs.
|
 |
Change formats from
CDA to MP3, to iPOD for example.
|
Some FAIR USE examples
are:
 | You have a vinyl
record purchased in your college days and want to make a copy to play in
your entertainment center.
|
 | A friend gives you a
cassette tape record obtained from a flea market. We create both CD and
MP3 version for you.
|
 | You own a prized jazz
collection consisting of 60 recordings. We can create a sets for
your home and vacation villa. Since you are a health enthusiast,
an MP3/iPOD version can be made so you can listen to the music while
jogging.
|
 | You are getting married. And you want to give away
music CDs to 160 guests. We have no problem creating a master
wedding CD if you sign a waiver indicating that you are giving the music
away or that there is no admission charge. However, we ask you to limit
the selection to
1 track music from any one
song or album.
|
 | For an end of year PTA
thank you, PTA members want to share kid pictures taken during the
school year a DVD. Someone added very current and very popular
music to the slide show. The artist is attributed.
|
With the PTA example, there
may be a real question of ownership for current music
and
possible financial harm to the copyright owner. Even though the DVD is
gifted to teachers, school kids, and grandparents, there is a possibility
to financial harm even though we are make a
low number of discs.
With the wedding example,
there is a practical problems associated with finding the correct owner of
each music piece or locating a royal "collecting organization".
While we are not lawyers or schooled in the fine mesh of copyright law, we
hope that entertainment interest are served if the wedding guest enjoy the
artist's music, are
prompted to go out and
purchase that artist's works.
